AI‑powered recruitment tools—like automated interviews, chatbots, and games—promise efficiency and bias reduction. But when it comes to candidates with disabilities, the picture is more complex: AI can both facilitate and hinder access to employment.
Most AI hiring tools are built without integrating disability-related needs by design.
While these tools can streamline processes and promote objective outcomes, they may also introduce barriers—especially when interfaces aren’t accessible or when AI relies on biased data.
The validity and reliability of these tools for disabled applicants remain underexplored, raising questions around fairness in selection and applicant experience.
Worldwide regulations on AI use in hiring vary, with limited guidance on disability-specific protections.
Hiring Impact
Accessibility Gaps: Busy interfaces or required modalities (e.g., video, timed tests) can unintentionally exclude candidates with sensory, cognitive, or motor disabilities.
Algorithmic Blind Spots: Data-driven decisions often replicate historical hiring biases—filtering out those with non-linear work histories common among disabled individuals.
Trust and Experience: When candidates perceive AI tools as unfair or inaccessible, they may disengage from the process entirely.
AI in hiring offers potential—but when disability inclusion is an afterthought, equity can quickly turn into exclusion. It's time for ethical co-creation, rigorous audits, and better regulation to ensure tools meant to help actually do so.
